Roads are becoming busier and distractions more complex, causing students to be more at risk than ever before. A 2019 NASDPTS survey identified 95,000 illegal passes across 39 states in a single day; that's over 17 million near misses in one school year.
It's not surprising then that for 57% of the school bus transportation professionals we polled in our recent webinar: How to Keep Kids Safe from Illegal School Bus Passing Accidents, illegal passing is considered to be a serious problem with daily violations and multiple close calls per year. However, according to our second poll, only 47% said public awareness campaigns are methods they use to keep kids safe.

The tracking of students on school buses is all about safety. In order to do their jobs properly, those who are responsible for students need a reliable way to communicate student and bus data to authorities during emergency situations.
From a safety perspective, boarding a school bus can be viewed similarly to boarding an airplane. Knowing who is on the vehicle contributes to the level of safety that can be provided and in some cases determines whether the bus even leaves a stop. Some districts indicate a student tracking program is mandatory and will not allow students who are not enrolled in the program to board.

Transit agencies use video evidence to help them reduce liability and provide an extra layer of safety and security for bus operators and passengers alike. Video helps provide a clear and accurate story of events on the bus as well as how the vehicle interacts with pedestrians and other motor vehicles.
